How to Connect a Key Result to a KPI

This article explains how to create a Key Result (KR) that is measured by an existing KPI in WorkBoard.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Overview

Connecting a KR to a KPI lets you automate progress tracking by using an existing KPI as the KRโ€™s data source. Instead of manually updating progress, the KR pulls its value from the selected KPI.

This is useful when:

  • the KR should reflect a metric already tracked elsewhere,

  • you want more consistent reporting,

  • you want to reduce manual status updates.

Before you start

Make sure:

  • you already have an Objective created,

  • the KPI you want to use already exists,

  • you have permission to edit the objective and add key results.

Steps to connect a KR to a KPI

1. Open the objective

Go to the objective where you want to add the key result.

From Objectives, open the relevant team objective, or create a new one.

2. Start creating the Key Result

In the Create Key Result panel:

  • enter the Key Result name,

  • optionally add a description,

  • select the Person responsible for business result,

  • add co-owners if needed.

3. Change the measurement type

In the section How will you measure your key result?, select Change measurement type.

4. Choose KPI as the source

From the measurement options, go to Source from KPIs or external applications and select KPIs.

This tells WorkBoard that the KR should be driven by KPI data instead of manual entry.

5. Select the KPI

In the Select KPI dialog:

  • search for the KPI you want to use,

  • choose the correct KPI from the list,

  • click Save.

6. Review the connected KR

After saving, the KR changes to KPI-based measurement.

You will see:

  • How will you measure your key result? = KPI

  • Selected Data Source = the KPI you chose

  • the KR is now sourcing data from that KPI

7. Configure tracking details

Review and update the remaining KR settings as needed:

  • Start value

  • Result value direction, such as Should increase to

  • Target value

  • Committed Result if applicable

  • Unit of Measurement

  • Calculate overall progress as

8. Save the KR

Click Save in the right-side panel.

The KR will now appear under the objective with a KPI icon and a note indicating that it is sourcing data from a KPI.

9. Finish the objective setup

Once all key results are added, click Done at the top of the page.

What changes after the connection

Once a KR is connected to a KPI:

  • The KR is measured through the KPI data source

  • Progress is no longer treated like a standard manual update KR

  • The objective view shows the KR as KPI-sourced
