Close and Reopen Key Results

Close a single Key Result when the work is done, without closing its Objective

Overview

When a Key Result is finished but its Objective is still open, you can close that Key Result on its own. This is helpful when a shorter Key Result lives under a longer Objective - for example, a quarterly Key Result under an annual Objective.

Closing a Key Result marks it as finished work and gets it out of the way, without deleting it:

  • It keeps counting toward the Objective's progress at the value it had when you closed it;

  • It stops asking for updates. No more update reminders, and it won't show as Due for Update or Overdue;

  • Default value filter for KR status is Open;

  • You can reopen it at any time.

Anyone who can edit a Key Result can close or reopen it.

Close a Key Result

You can close a Key Result from three places: the Key Result on an Objective, the Key Result Details page, and the Key Result Artifact.

  1. Next to the Key Result, click the kebab menu (3 dots).

  2. Select Close Key Result. It's the last option in the menu.

  3. Review the confirmation. It shows the Key Result's title and its current and target values, and explains what closing does.

  4. Click Close Key Result to confirm, or Cancel to keep it open.

You can close a Key Result at any progress value, including 0%. It doesn't need to reach its target first.

What changes when a Key Result is closed

  • Progress is kept: The Key Result keeps contributing to the Objective's progress at the value it had when you closed it. Nothing is deleted;

  • Scoring is locked: Progress, target, Starting From, Committed target, measurement type and unit, weight, Calculate overall progress as, and updater and cadence can't be changed until you reopen it;

  • Comments, owner, and due date stay editable;

  • No more update requests: Update reminders and notifications stop, including any reminder that was already scheduled. The Key Result is removed from Updates Needed and bulk update, and is not included in agent update pings or Briefs;

  • No overdue status: A closed Key Result never shows as Due for Update, Overdue, or Past Due - including in search results and the Result Freshness filter. It's also left out of overdue reports;

  • The Update and Confidence actions are hidden on the Key Result Details page and the Key Result Artifact.

How a closed Key Result looks

A closed Key Result shows a grey Closed pill and a greyed-out title. Its current and target values and its chart keep their usual RAG color, so you can still see how it finished.

  • On the Key Result Details page and the Key Result Artifact, the pill appears right after the title.

  • On an Objective and in the Objective pop-up, the pill appears where the update status usually shows.

Note: Closed is not the same as Achieved. A Key Result can be closed whether or not it reached its target.

Activity and history

Closing a Key Result adds a Closed Key Result entry to its Activity thread. It looks like an Update entry and records where the Key Result stood at the moment it was closed:

  • Value: current value against target

  • Confidence: the confidence flag

  • RAG Rating: the RAG category, and how far ahead or behind plan it was

  • Progress: actual and expected progress (for example:
    Actual: 102% · Expected: 88%)

  • Definition: start value, measurement direction, and target (for example, 0 → Should increase to 88)

  • Time remaining at close

The Key Result's history also records who closed it and when. Reopening adds a matching Reopened Key Result entry.

Reopen a Key Result

  1. Find the closed Key Result. On the OKR list or Teams page, you may need to select Closed on the Key Result Status filter first. [link to Article 2]

  2. Click the kebab menu (3 dots).

  3. Select Reopen Key Result.

There's no confirmation step. The Key Result becomes editable again, the Closed pill is removed, and it rejoins the update cycle at its next scheduled update. You won't get a catch-up reminder for the time it was closed.

Closing and reopening Objectives

  • Closing an Objective closes all of its Key Results;

  • While an Objective is closed, its Key Results can't be reopened on their own. Reopen the Objective first;

  • Reopening an Objective remembers what you closed. Key Results that were closed only because the Objective was closed are reopened. Key Results you had closed on their own before closing the Objective stay closed.

Mirrored, rollup, and Multiple Interval Target Key Results

  • Mirrored Key Results follow the Key Result they mirror. Closing or reopening the original closes or reopens its mirrors. You can't close a mirror on its own. [link to Mirror a Key Result]

  • Rollup Key Results freeze at their current value when closed and stop recalculating from their child Key Results. Reopening resumes the calculation. A closed child Key Result keeps feeding its parent at its closed value.

  • Multiple Interval Target (MIT) Key Results: each child Key Result can be closed and reopened on its own. Closing the parent doesn't close its children.
